”Why should I read newspapers and magazines? I get news on TV and radio.” You may have heard people say that. They don’t know that there is much more fun than just news in a newspaper or a magazine.
You enjoy reading special articles about hobbies, home, sport, and movie stars. Maybe you’ll like comics. You read where to buy what you need at a lowest price, what happened yesterday in your town and around the world. Newspapers also tell you where to go for fun. They also tell you about shows and sports. Lots of events happen to people, and newspapers tell you what happened, who did it, where it happened, why it happened and how it happened.
Reading is one way people become well informed. Whenever you sit down to read, you are also sitting down to learn. This is true no matter what the reading is - a novel, a newspaper, a magazine article, a textbook, or even the label on a bag of cookies. Written words are always a message from one person to another - just as spoken words are. So, the very act of reading - reading anything - means you are learning what the message is the author has set down for you.
There are so many things I can be when I leave school! I can enter a college or an institute or a university, or go to work at a factory, an office or on a farm. Some of my friends haven’t made up their mind yet what to do after leaving school. But most of my classmates know very well what to do and what profession to choose for living. Scholars say that there are five types of professions:” man plus man”, "man plus nature”, "man plus machinery”, "man plus artistic image”, "man plus sign systems”.
There are many kinds of doctors, or physicians in the USA. Some doctors take care of general health problems. Other doctors are specialists. They take care of very specific health problems.
General practitioners, or GPs, are also called family doctors. They can give you a general checkup. They prescribe medicine, give shots, take care of common health - care situations. If your doctor finds that you have a serious illness or a special problem, he or she will send you to a specialist.
Almost everybody likes sports, either to play or to watch. It’s common knowledge that sports are a good, healthy activity in either case. If you play sports, of course your health will improve and you will be a happier person for it. If you watch spectator sports like professional baseball or figure skating, you can enjoy it with your family or friends. Children will learn many good things from watching sports contests. They can learn the virtues of patience, hard work, teamwork, and fair play. Sports are an important part of society. Everybody agrees about that, but there is no agreement about which sports are best. For instance, some people like jogging.
Music... I can hardly find a single person who would ignore music. Through all the time, music has been an important part of every person’s life. The influence of music is just great. Do you ever think about what effect music has on your life? When you listen to the radio, your mood can be changed just by the song that comes on.
Most people today see the world through the medium of TV. In many countries, it is not only a source of news and entertainment but also of education. There are lots of educational programs on different subjects in many countries.
There are cable TV networks, which specialize in sport, movies, health care, politics, and many other areas of interest to people. It is hard to imagine the world without TV. We hurry home to catch a favorite cartoon before supper, then watch the news during supper, and finally relax with a cup of tea after supper - while we watch the latest popular soap opera, mystery, or a variety show.
The police were called because of an abandoned car. The policeman came and saw the car was in a no-parking zone. He wrote a ticket and called a towtruckto impound the car. It is the law. The truck came and as it was hooking up to tow the car, the driver and policeman heard a weak sound come out of the car. The policeman looked inside. Surprisingly he saw a little fuzzy kitten scared, shaking, cold, and hungry.
