Mew, mew, says the cat,
Grunt, grunt, goes the hog,
And squeak goes the rat.
Tu-whu, says the owl,
Caw, caw, says the crow,
Quack, quack, says the duck,
And what cuckoos say you know.

bow-wow, mew, grunt, squeak и др.- звукоподражания
to go = to say
hog - боров
rat - крыса
owl - сова
cuckoo - кукушка

To The Snail
Snail, snail, put out your horns,
And I'll give you bread and barley-corns.

snail - улитка
horns - рожки (улитки)
barley-corns - зерна ячменя

To the Lady-Bird
Lady-bird, lady-bird,
Fly away home,
Your house is on fire
And your children all gone;
All except one
And that's little Ann
And she has crept under
The warming pan.

lady-bird - божья коровка
fly away home - лети домой
all gone - все улетели
all except one - все, кроме одной
she has crept - она уползла
warming pan - теплая кастрюля

Up went pussy-cat, and down went he;

Little Robin Redbreast jumped upon a wall,
Pussy-cat jumped after him, and almost got a fall;
Little Robin chirped and sang, and what did pussy say?
Pussy-cat said,
Mew, and Robin jumped away.

up went pussy-cat - вверх полезла кошка
to catch - ловить, поймать
and almost got a fall - и чуть не упала
chirped and sang - защебетала и запела

To the Cuckoo
Cuckoo, cuckoo, what do you do?
In April I open my bill;
In May I sing all day;
In June I change my tune;
In July away I fly; In August away I must.

cuckoo - кукушка
bill - клюв
I change my tune - я пою на другой лад

Little Bird
Once I saw a little bird

shook - качнул
flew - улетел

How many chickens have you got?
Madam, I've got ten.
Four of them are yellow,
And four of them are brown,
And two of them are speckled red,
The nicest in the town.

Mrs. - миссис
to have got = to have
madam - госпожа
speckled red - пестро-рыжие

Jack Sprat's Pig
Little Jack Sprat
Once had a pig;
It was not very little,
Nor yet very big,
It was not very lean,
It was not very fat
It's a good pig to grunt,
Said little Jack Sprat.

once - некогда, когда-то
not ... nor - не ... и не
lean - тощий
fat - жирный
to grunt - хрюкать
said - сказал
Baa, Baa, Black Sheep

wool - шерсть
sir - сэр, господин
master - хозяин
dame - госпожа
lane - узкая улочка

БАРАШЕК
- Ты скажи, барашек наш,

- Не стриги меня пока.
Дам я шерсти три мешка:

Very gently will play.
She shall sit by my side,
And I'll give her some food;
And pussy will love me
Because I am good.

kindness - доброта
pussy = pussy-cat
to hurt - причинять боль
harm - вред, зло
to pull - тянуть
to drive away - прогонять
gently - нежно

Traveller
Pussy-cat, pussy-cat,
Where have you been?
I've been to London
To look at the Queen.
Pussy-cat, pussy-cat,
What did you do there?
I frightened a little mouse
Under her chair.

traveller - путешественник
Where have you been? - Где ты была?
I've been (= I have been) to London - Я была в Лондоне
queen - королева
to frighten - пугать

В ГОСТЯХ У КОРОЛЕВЫ
- Где ты была сегодня, киска?
- У королевы у английской.
- Что ты видала при дворе?
- Видала мышку на ковре.
